I arrive at the restaurant at 7:30, just like Lisa wanted. I’m heading from the cab toward the front door when…

“Excuse me, but you’re James, right?”

“Um…yeah, I mean…yes.”

“Your wife called and wanted to let you know there’s been a slight change of plans.”

My eyes narrow as I look at this man. He’s clean-cut and shaved. He’s wearing a shirt and tie, no suit jacket, nice pants… is he with the restaurant?

“Alright…” I say. “What exactly is…”

“Just a change of venue from what was originally planned,” the man says to me. As he speaks, he takes a few steps toward me. I take one back and…bump into someone else.

“Oh, excuse…” I begin to say…when a hand grabs my arm forcefully. Then I protest. “Hey!”

“Just come with us, James,” the first man says, right in front of me now. He grabs my other arm. I make to struggle.

BOP!

“Ugh!” I groan from the sharp hit to my back. It hits a nerve or something, for my legs just give out from under me. If the two men hadn’t had me by the arms, I would have fallen to the ground.

“What the fuck!?!” I say, trying to sound tough…but there’s quite a bit of alarm in my voice as well. Who the hell are these guys? What the fuck do they want with me?

They have my arms under their shoulders so they can move me along, as if I can’t walk on my own. I can…though barely. The hit one of them gave me to my back, right along my spine…well, it made me pretty numb. The feeling’s starting to come back, but not fast enough for me to muscle my way out of this. And I’m not sure I could.

We reach the end of the block, round it, and come to a stop. My eyes go wide. Here are two more men. The ones that have me now hand me off to these guys. Oh shit! I thnk. These are bikers, with biker vests and tattoos all over, piercings and mean looks in their eye. These are not the kind of people you want to fuck with…so why in the hell are they fucking with me? What the hell did I do?

I say those things as they half-walk, half-carry me to…wherever…but it does no good. They won’t say a word.

We continue on. We pass by another block completely, make another turn, go halfway down past apartments and businesses, and then slip into an alley. I’ve never been in this area of town before so have no real reference point. Then they stop at a nondescript metal door. There’s no sign above it. One of them knocks a few times. After a few moments, the door cracks open.

“Carter,” one of the men holding me says. That causes the door to come fully open. A man steps aside and then we’re moving forward.

They push me inside, into a dark corridor or hallway of some sort. I hear throbbing, bass-fueled music somewhere ahead of me…but can see nothing.
